Post-Purchase Upsell Statistics: Data From 1.67 Million Conversions (2026)

The most productive moment in ecommerce isn't on the product page, in the cart, or even at checkout. It's the few seconds right after a shopper pays.

Across thousands of stores using Upsell.com, shoppers accepted 1.67 million one-click post-purchase offers in the last twelve months - more than every other upsell placement combined. If you run exactly one upsell on your store, the data says it should be this one.

So let's start with the thing itself - what these offers actually are - and then get into the numbers.

First: what exactly is a one-click post-purchase upsell?

If you've shopped online lately, you've probably met one without knowing its name. On Shopify, right after payment is confirmed - and before the thank-you page - a store can show a dedicated offer page. The shopper's payment details are already saved, so accepting the offer takes exactly one tap: no second checkout, no retyping a card number, and no way to disturb the order that was just placed.

Stores can run up to two of these pages per order: offer #1, then offer #2 for shoppers who declined (or accepted) the first. And since every single buyer passes through them, think of it as a post-purchase email with a 100% open rate.

Here's what an optimized one looks like:

Post-purchase upsell statistics: key takeaways

  • Post-purchase offers drive 67.9% of all upsell conversions - 1.67 million in the 12 months analyzed.
  • The first offer accounts for 1,379,261 conversions; the second adds another 293,899 - roughly 21 extra conversions for every 100 on offer #1.
  • In December, the second offer's yield jumps to about 27 per 100 first-offer conversions (vs ~20 in February) - shoppers say yes more often in gift season.
  • The channel is reliable year-round: post-purchase offers held between 64% and 70% of all upsell conversions in every single month.
  • December is the peak: 231,119 post-purchase conversions in one month - 2.3x the February low.

Why one-click post-purchase offers dominate upselling

Zero risk for the shopper, zero risk for the order, perfect timing - and one tap to say yes. That's how you get the 67.9% from the takeaways: this single placement out-converts the thank-you page (18.5%) and checkout (6.3%) put together, several times over.

Offer #1 vs offer #2: the 21% nobody collects

Post-purchase funnels can show a second offer to shoppers who decline (or accept) the first. The split across 12 months:

  • Post-purchase offer #1 - 1,379,261 conversions
  • Post-purchase offer #2 - 293,899 conversions

That's 21 additional conversions for every 100 on the first offer - volume a store simply forfeits by stopping at one. The second offer reaches shoppers the first one missed, so these yeses don't cannibalize anything.

And the second offer gets better when traffic is hottest: in December its yield rose to roughly 27 conversions per 100 first-offer conversions, versus about 20 in February. In gift season, shoppers who already said yes once keep saying yes.

Post-purchase upselling through the year

The channel is both seasonal and dependable. December peaked at 231,119 post-purchase conversions - 2.3x the February low of 99,748 - yet the placement never dropped below 64% of all upsell conversions in any month, and never rose above 70%. Whatever the season does to volume, the dominance doesn't move.

Practically, that means one thing: a post-purchase funnel you tune in October works straight through BFCM at more than double the volume, with no extra traffic cost. Pair it with a tight checkout and the whole post-payment journey compounds.

How to apply these post-purchase statistics

  • Run a post-purchase offer before anything else. It's 67.9% of the upsell opportunity, and it can't hurt your checkout conversion.
  • Always configure offer #2. It adds ~21% more conversions - and ~27% in December. A cheaper or complementary product works well as the fallback.
  • Make offer #1 complementary, not random. The shopper just told you exactly what they want; offer the thing that completes it.
  • Set your funnels before November. December alone delivers 2.3x the conversions of a slow month on the same setup.
  • Catch the decliners downstream. Shoppers who pass on both offers still hit your thank-you page, which drives another 18.5% of upsell conversions - see our thank-you page statistics.
