Upsell Statistics 2026: What 2.5 Million Conversions Reveal

Most upsell advice is opinion. Ours comes with receipts.

Upsell.com (formerly ReConvert) powers upsell offers for thousands of Shopify and Wix stores, across the whole buying journey - product page, cart, checkout, and after the purchase. Over the last twelve months (October 2025 to October 2026), shoppers in those stores said yes to more than 2.5 million upsell offers.

This article is your glimpse into that pile of yeses: where upsells actually get accepted, which discounts winning offers carry, and when in the year shoppers are most agreeable. Steal freely - we collected the data so you don't have to.

Upsell statistics 2026: key takeaways

  • 88.4% of upsell conversions happen after the shopper has already paid - the full placement breakdown is below.
  • Post-purchase offers alone drive 67.9% of all upsell conversions - more than everything else combined.
  • A second post-purchase offer adds roughly 21% more conversions on top of the first.
  • 20% is the most common discount on accepted offers - but 6.8% of accepted offers carried no discount at all.
  • Nearly one in four upsell conversions land in November and December.

Every number here comes from real, anonymized store data - full details in the note at the end of this article.

Where upsells actually convert: conversions by placement

Every conversion in our data is tied to the spot where the shopper accepted the offer. Here's the full split:

Bar chart: share of upsell conversions by placement - post-purchase offer #1 56%, thank-you page 18.5%, post-purchase offer #2 11.9%, checkout 6.3%, cart 3.8%, order status page 2%, product page 1.5%
  • Post-purchase offer #1 - 1,379,261 conversions (56.0%)
  • Thank-you page - 455,935 conversions (18.5%)
  • Post-purchase offer #2 - 293,899 conversions (11.9%)
  • Checkout - 154,046 conversions (6.3%)
  • Cart page & cart drawer - 94,166 conversions (3.8%)
  • Order status page - 50,010 conversions (2.0%)
  • Product page - 36,613 conversions (1.5%)

That first takeaway - 88.4% of conversions happening after payment - is sitting right there in the chart: post-purchase offers, the thank-you page, and the order status page do almost all the lifting, nearly nine of every ten accepted offers between them.

Why post-purchase upsells dominate

If you've never used one: a post-purchase offer is the one-tap offer a shopper sees right after paying, before the thank-you page. Accepting takes a single click - no retyping card details - and it can't touch the order they just placed. Zero risk for the shopper, zero risk for you, and the moment of maximum trust. It shows: this one placement produces 67.9% of all upsell conversions by itself.

The practical takeaway: if you run upsells anywhere, run them after payment first. Pre-purchase placements like the product page and cart still earn their keep (especially for product bundling and AOV), but they're the garnish, not the meal.

One offer is not enough: the second-offer effect

Many stores stop at a single post-purchase offer, and the data says that leaves money on the table: for every 100 conversions on the first offer, stores collect another 21 on the second (1,379,261 vs 293,899 conversions). The second offer typically shows to shoppers who declined the first, so these are yeses you simply don't get any other way.

The thank-you page is the most underrated placement

The humble order-confirmation page drives 18.5% of upsell conversions on its own - nearly three times checkout's share. And unlike a post-purchase offer, it keeps working after the sale: shoppers come back to check on their order, which is also why the order status page quietly adds another 2.0%, largely on autopilot.

Get more from every order

Upsell.com helps you increase AOV with targeted offers across the full shopping journey, from product and cart to checkout, post purchase, and beyond.

Upsell discount statistics: what accepted offers look like

Of the 624,802 conversions where a percentage discount was recorded, here are the discount levels that show up most on accepted offers:

  • 20% off - 122,865 conversions (19.7%)
  • 30% off - 85,145 conversions (13.6%)
  • 50% off - 75,822 conversions (12.1%)
  • 10% off - 61,606 conversions (9.9%)
  • No discount (0%) - 42,677 conversions (6.8%)
  • 25% off - 38,682 conversions (6.2%)
  • 15% off - 33,870 conversions (5.4%)
  • 40% off - 25,866 conversions (4.1%)
  • 100% off (free gift) - 9,198 conversions (1.5%)

Two things stand out. First, 20% is the sweet spot merchants and shoppers agree on: deep enough to feel like a deal, shallow enough to protect your margin, and it appears on nearly one in five accepted offers. Second, discounts aren't mandatory: 6.8% of accepted upsells carried no discount at all. A genuinely relevant offer sells itself.

One honest caveat: these are the discounts on offers that converted. To crown the single best-performing discount outright, we'd also need to count every offer that was shown and declined - that's a dataset we're working on, and when we have it, you'll read about it here first.

Upsell seasonality: November and December do the heavy lifting

Upselling is strongly seasonal. December was the biggest month in our data with 330,608 conversions - 2.1 times the February low (156,353) - and November and December together account for roughly 24% of the year's upsell conversions.

The implication: your Black Friday-Cyber Monday setup matters twice as much as any other quarter's. The funnels you tune in October will see roughly double their usual volume within weeks, so tightening your checkout and post-purchase offers before November pays for itself in a single season.

What this means for your store

  • Start after the payment. If you only build one thing, build a post-purchase offer - it's where 67.9% of upsell conversions happen.
  • Always add a second offer. It adds about 21% more conversions, mostly from shoppers who declined offer #1.
  • Don't ignore the thank-you page. It converts nearly three times checkout's share and keeps working while shoppers track their order.
  • Test 20% first. It's the most common discount on accepted offers; try trimming toward 10-15% to protect margin before you ever go deeper.
  • Get ready for Q4 in October. A quarter of the year's upsell conversions arrive in November-December.

Frequently asked questions about upsell statistics

Where do upsells convert best?

After payment. In Upsell.com's 2026 analysis of 2.5 million upsell conversions, 88.4% happened post-payment: 67.9% on one-click post-purchase offers, 18.5% on the thank-you page, and 2.0% on the order status page.

What is the most common upsell discount?

20% off. It appears on 19.7% of accepted upsell offers with a recorded discount - more than any other level - followed by 30% (13.6%) and 50% (12.1%).

Do upsells work without a discount?

Yes. 6.8% of accepted upsell offers in the dataset carried no discount at all. Relevance to the original purchase matters more than the discount.

Yes. Across 1.67 million post-purchase conversions, the second offer added roughly 21 extra conversions for every 100 on the first.

When do upsells convert the most?

November and December, which together account for roughly 24% of annual upsell conversions. December alone peaked at 2.1x the slowest month.
